Introducing JonesLexile

I’m excited to finally share a project I’ve been working on: JonesLexile. It’s a bespoke digital monograph engine designed for scholars, editors, and anyone who’s ever wondered about the “structural soul” of a manuscript.

What is it?

JonesLexile isn’t just another reading level checker. It uses advanced linguistic models (specifically Google’s Gemini Flash) to bridge the gap between raw data and literary intuition.

When you input a book title or ISBN, the engine performs a deep-tissue analysis of the text’s structural characteristics, including:

• Lexile Leveling: A precise measure of reading complexity.
• Sentiment Arcs: Visualizing the emotional journey of the narrative.
• Vocabulary Density: Quantifying the richness of the author’s lexicon.
• Editorial Insights: AI-generated notes that provide context beyond mere numbers.

Why I Built This

As someone who spends a lot of time at the intersection of engineering and creative expression, I found most “readability” tools to be either too simplistic or purely academic. I wanted something that felt premium—a tool that looked as good as the insights it provided.

How it Works

The tool is built with a modern stack:

• Astro: For the lightning-fast skeleton and SSR capabilities.
• React & Framer Motion: Powering the fluid, interactive analysis dashboard.
• Tailwind v4: Using the latest CSS features for a bespoke aesthetic.
• Gemini API: The “brain” that performs the sophisticated linguistic analysis.

What’s Next?

This is just the beginning. I’m looking into adding support for comparative analysis (putting two authors side-by-side) and perhaps even “rhythm” detection—quantifying the prose’s cadence.
